Connecting Devices to the Router

Here you will find instructions for connecting devices to the router:

Teltonika Router

Devices are connected to the [LAN] port of the router.

If the router has multiple [LAN] ports, these are configured as a switch, so all Ethernet ports can be used equally for connecting devices.

The [WAN] port is by default according to Teltonika settings not intended for connecting devices. However, optionally the WAN port can also be configured as a LAN port for connecting devices, see Configure router WAN port as an additional LAN port

If more devices need to be connected than available ports, an additional switch must be used. If the router has the WiFi Access Point enabled, the devices can also be connected to the router via WiFi.

Important notes:

  • Please note that the router’s DHCP server must have enough free IP addresses available when connecting via network cable or WiFi if the devices are to obtain their IP addresses automatically. See also Why do not all devices connected to the router access the internet?.
  • If multiple devices are connected that should be reachable via port forwarding, it must be ensured that the IP address of the device does not change.
    • Option 1: Devices have fixed IP addresses:

The IP address including the default gateway and DNS servers are configured statically in the devices:

      • IP address: Free IP address from the IP address range of the cellular router
      • Subnet mask: Subnet mask of the cellular router (default: 255.255.255.0)
      • Default gateway: LAN IP address of the cellular router (default: 192.168.1.1)
      • DNS server: LAN IP address of the cellular router (default: 192.168.1.1)

The IP address range of the DHCP server must be adjusted so that the
assigned IP addresses do not collide with the DHCP server’s IP address range.

    • Option 2: The devices obtain their IP addresses automatically:

The devices can obtain their IP address automatically from the router’s DHCP server. However, a fixed binding (Static Lease) with the desired IP address of the device based on the MAC address must be set up, see Configure DHCP server.

Advantech Router

Devices are connected to the [ETH0] socket of the router.

Only if [ETH0] and [ETH1] are configured as a bridge in the router do they function as a switch, so both Ethernet ports can then be used equally for connecting devices. For routers preconfigured by Wireless Logic mdex, the router configuration sheet shows the status: LAN-Ports: Both ETH-Ports (bridged).

If more devices need to be connected than available ETH ports, an additional switch must be used. If the router supports and has enabled a 'WiFi Access Point', the devices can also be connected to the router via WiFi.
