Setting up automatic monitoring of the mobile data connection in the router (Ping Reboot)

Description

Modems usually only check whether a mobile connection is established, but not whether data can actually be transmitted. However, for example due to maintenance work or temporary disruptions, it can happen that despite an existing mobile connection, no data transmission is possible. In such cases, the mobile connection must be disconnected and re-established, which often requires a restart of the router.

This is especially important for routers in remote locations where continuous local access is not possible, to set up an automated ping reboot monitoring. The router then sends ping requests at regular intervals to a ping server. If no response is received within a specified period, the router interprets this as a fault and initiates a restart. This ensures that data transmission is monitored and the router is automatically restarted in case of problems.

Suitable ping servers

A ping server must be configured in the router that is reachable via the router's SIM card. This ping server can be a publicly available server, e.g. 8.8.8.8.

Below you will find suitable mdex ping servers, especially when using Wireless Logic or mdex SIM cards, or mdex IP services:

public-ping.mdex.de (or 185.39.176.22): Public ping server, recommended for all SIM cards with internet access. This ping server is suitable for Wireless Logic SIM cards (SIMPro)!
ping.mdex.de (or 46.16.216.16): Internal mdex ping server, only reachable from the mdex network when using an mdex SIM card with fixed.IP+ or public.IP. This ping server is not suitable for Wireless Logic SIM cards (SIMPro)!
172.21.0.1: Internal mdex ping server, only reachable from the mdex network when using an mdex OpenVPN service fixed.IP+ or mdex public.IP. This ping server is not suitable for Wireless Logic (SIMPro) or mdex SIM cards (mCOP)!

Setting up ping reboot in the router

Setting up a ping reboot for a Teltonika router or Advantech router:

Teltonika router

To set up the ping reboot on a Teltonika router, please follow these steps. This description is based on firmware version R_00.07.06 and may differ for other firmware versions.

  1. Log in to the router
  2. Go to System > Maintenance > Auto Reboot and click the 'Edit' button next to Ping/Wget Reboot
  3. Set the following settings:

    • Enable: Activate (on)
    • Interval count: Number of failed attempts before the reboot is triggered (recommended: 3)
    • Host to ping: Set the desired ping server, for example 'public-ping.mdex.de'
  4. Apply the changes by clicking 'Save & Apply'.
  5. The ping reboot is now set up and monitors the mobile data connection.

Further information on the ping reboot settings can be found on the Teltonika homepage, for example under RUT241: Ping/Wget Reboot.

Advantech router

To set up connection monitoring of mobile data transmission on an Advantech router, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the router.
  2. Under Configuration > Mobile WAN, make the following settings:
    • Check Connection:
      • enabled: This option sends ping requests based on the routing table in the router.
      • enabled + bind: This option ensures that the ping is always sent via the mobile WAN network interface (SIM card).
    • Ping IP Address: Set the desired ping server
    • Ping Interval: Ping requests are sent at this interval (in seconds).
    • Ping Timeout: The time (in seconds) to wait for a response.
  3. Apply the changes by clicking 'Apply'.
  4. Connection monitoring of mobile data transmission is now set up.
