What are Caps & Alerts?
Caps & Alerts help you manage SIM data usage. You can set rules to notify you when usage reaches a certain level, or to stop a SIM from using more data.
For example, if your tariff includes 5GB of data, you could:
- Set an alert at 4GB so you know the SIM is nearing its limit
- Set a cap at 5GB to stop any further usage
This helps you avoid unexpected charges and identify unusual usage.
How Caps & Alerts work
Each rule is triggered when a SIM reaches a defined data usage threshold.
Depending on the rule, the system will either:
- Send an alert (email notification)
- Apply a cap to the SIM (and email an alert to say the SIM has been capped)
Note: Capping a SIM prevents any new data sessions from starting, it does not stop any data session currently in progress. Therefore, a SIM may continue to consume data even after a cap is applied. Wireless Logic accepts no responsibility for additional charges incurred for SIMs that breach their data limit due to a session not ending when a cap has been automatically applied.
What happens when a SIM is capped
When a cap is applied:
- The SIM cannot start new data sessions
- The SIM cannot send SMS or make voice calls
- The SIM can still receive SMS and voice calls
Caps are automatically removed at the end of the billing period. You can also remove a cap manually at any time. If a cap has been removed, the SIM will start to consume data again, this will not re-trigger the threshold rule that capped it. However, if a different rule is triggered by the new threshold limit then a new cap may be automatically applied to a SIM. In this way, it is possible a SIM could be capped and uncapped several times in a billing period.
Caps and billing cycles
Data usage resets at the end of each billing period (usually monthly). When this happens:
- All caps are removed
- Usage tracking starts again from zero
Who can use Caps & Alerts
Caps & Alerts are available to users with "Role Alerts" and "Role Caps" permissions. All administrators have the roles added by default. The "Remove Cap" action is only available to users with the "Role Uncap" role.
If you cannot see the Caps & Alerts menu, contact your account administrator.
