Updating the Router/Modem Firmware of the Teltonika Router

Teltonika provides the latest firmware versions for both the router and, if applicable, the installed modem. The firmware for the modem and the router can be updated independently by the user.

Notes on FOTA

When using FOTA, the router checks with a Teltonika update server for a newer firmware version each time it logs into the web interface (WebUI). If desired, the user can then initiate an update. FOTA may not be available or may be limited on some router models. According to Teltonika’s factory settings, FOTA is generally enabled.

For routers preconfigured by Wireless Logic mdex (delivered in Germany and the EU), FOTA was disabled until firmware version R_00.07.15 and has been enabled for the “Stable firmware” since version R_00.07.16. If FOTA is disabled, the user can activate it independently to perform a FOTA update:

  1. Log in to the router’s web interface (WebUI) using a browser.
  2. Under System > Firmware > FOTA Settings, activate the option Enable FOTA and apply with 'Save & Apply':
The options "Stable firmware" and "Latest firmware" are only available from firmware version R_00.07.16 onwards. For older firmware versions such as R_00.07.06, FOTA is only available in "Advanced" mode and offers only the option to switch FOTA on or off ("Enable FOTA: On/Off").

  3. FOTA is now activated and automatically checks whether new modem and firmware versions are available. Follow the further steps as described in Triggering Firmware and Modem Update via FOTA.

Please note the following before performing an update

  • Performing a firmware update is always at your own risk. Please note that modem or firmware updates can fail in rare cases, especially when performed remotely (via a mobile connection). Therefore, the decision to carry out an update should be carefully considered.
  • For SIM cards with a low data allowance, bear in mind that updates consume data. Preferably, perform a local update via LAN by transferring the firmware file directly to the router. When performing a "FOTA" update, the WAN port should be connected to the internet to save on mobile data.
  • The current settings in the router are converted and thus retained during a properly executed firmware update. However, we recommend downloading and saving a backup file of the router configuration beforehand. This allows you to revert to the old firmware version and configuration if any problems occur.
  • Notes on upgrading from an older Legacy Firmware to the current firmware:

Triggering Firmware and Modem Update via FOTA

  1. Log in to the router’s web interface (WebUI) using a browser.
  2. FOTA must be activated according to Notes on FOTA.
  3. The router checks with the Teltonika server whether updates are available and displays these under System > Firmware > Update Firmware under Firmware available on server.
  4. Make the respective settings for the desired firmware or modem update:
    • Router Firmware Update:

Keep settings should definitely remain set to on to preserve the current router configuration!

    • Modem Update:

  5. Clicking the 'Update' button downloads the current firmware and initiates the update process. During the firmware update, the downloaded firmware image is first checked, then the update must be started by clicking 'PROCEED'.
    • The power supply must not be turned off during the update process! The modem or firmware update usually takes about 5 minutes. During this time, the router is offline. After completion, the router will automatically restart and restore the mobile data connection.
  6. Now check the status under System > Firmware > Update Firmware. If "No update available" or "Newest version installed on the modem" is displayed for 'Firmware version' or 'Internal modem', the respective update was successful.
  7. The update process is now complete.

Updating Router Firmware via File

The firmware of the Teltonika router can be updated using a firmware file. The modem firmware is currently not offered as a file and can only be updated via FOTA.

  1. Download the current firmware file for the router model from the Teltonika homepage under Downloads.
  2. Log in to the router’s web interface (WebUI) using a browser.
  3. Under System > Firmware > Update Firmware, make the following settings:Keep settings should definitely remain set to on to preserve the current router configuration!
  4. Select the router firmware file (*.bin) using Browse.
  5. The file is transferred to the router and the firmware image checked. The update process must then be started by clicking 'PROCEED'.
    • The power supply must not be turned off during the update process! The firmware update takes about 5 minutes. During this time, the router is offline. After completion, the router will automatically restart and restore the mobile data connection.
  6. The firmware update is now complete.
