Update the router/modem firmware of a Teltonika router

Teltonika provides the latest firmware versions for the router and, where applicable, the installed modem. Users can independently update the firmware for both the modem and the router.

Notes on FOTA

When using FOTA, the router checks for newer firmware versions upon logging into the web interface (WebUI) at a Teltonika update server. If desired, the user can then initiate an update. FOTA may not be available or may be limited on certain router models. By default, FOTA is enabled according to Teltonika's factory settings.

For routers pre-configured by Wireless Logic mdex (delivered in Germany and the EU), FOTA is typically disabled for enhanced security. However, users have the option to enable FOTA independently to perform a FOTA update:

  1. Log in to the router's web interface (WebUI) using a browser.
  2. The "Advanced" mode must be enabled on the router if it is set to "Basic".
  3. Under System > Firmware > FOTA Configuration, enable the Enable FOTA option and apply it by clicking 'Save & Apply':The additional options "Device firmware update notifications" and "Modem firmware update notifications" will only be available with newer firmware versions and should also be enabled at that time.
  4. FOTA is now enabled and will automatically check for new modem and firmware versions. Follow the subsequent steps as per Initiate firmware and modem update via FOTA.

Please consider the following points before executing an update

  • The firmware update is carried out at the user's own risk. Please be aware that modem or firmware updates may, in rare cases, fail, particularly when conducted remotely (over a mobile connection). Therefore, the execution of an update should be carefully considered.
  • For SIM cards with limited inclusive data, it is important to note that updates consume data. Preferably, a local update should be performed via LAN by directly transferring the firmware file to the router. In the case of a "FOTA" update, the WAN port should be connected to the internet to conserve mobile data.
  • The current settings in the router will be converted and retained if the firmware update is executed correctly. However, it is advisable to download and save a backup file of the router configuration beforehand. This allows for a return to the previous firmware version and configuration should any issues arise.
  • Notes on upgrading from an older Legacy Firmware to the latest firmware:

Initiate firmware and modem update via FOTA

  1. FOTA must be enabled, see Notes on FOTA.
  2. Log in to the router's web interface (WebUI) using a browser.
  3. The router checks with the Teltonika server for upates and displays them at System > Firmware > Update Firmware under Firmware available on server.
  4. Make the necessary settings for the desired firmware or modem update:
    • Router Firmware update:

Keep settings should remain set to on to ensure the current router configuration is retained!
    • Modem update:

  5. By clicking the 'Update' button, the current firmware will be downloaded and the update process initiated. During the firmware update, the downloaded firmware image will be checked first, and the update must then be started by clicking 'PROCEED'.
    • The power supply must not be turned off during the update process! The modem or firmware update typically takes approximately 5 minutes. During this time, the router will be offline. Upon completion, the router will automatically restart and restore the mobile data connection.
  6. Now check the status under System > Firmware > Update Firmware. If "No update available" or "Newest version installed on the modem" is displayed under 'Firmware version' or 'Internal modem', the respective update was successful.
  7. The update process is now complete.

Update router firmware via file

The firmware of the Teltonika router can be updated using a firmware file. The modem firmware is currently not available as a file and can only be updated via FOTA.

  1. Download the current firmware file for the router model from the Teltonika homepage.
  2. Log in to the router's web interface (WebUI) using a browser.
  3. Under System > Firmware > Update Firmware, make the following settings:Keep settings should remain set to on to ensure the current router configuration is retained!
  4. Select the firmware file (*.bin) for the router using Browse.
  5. The file will be transferred to the router and the firmware image will be checked. The update process must then be initiated by clicking 'PROCEED'.
    • The power supply must not be turned off during the update process! The firmware update takes approximately 5 minutes. During this time, the router will be offline. Upon completion, the router will automatically restart and restore the mobile data connection.
  6. The firmware update is now complete.
