Preparing for 2G & 3G Network Sunsets in Spain

Overview

The retirement of 2G and 3G networks is an industry-wide transition, as mobile operators reallocate spectrum to support more efficient technologies such as 4G, 5G, LTE-M, and NB-IoT.

In Spain, this transition is underway but follows a more gradual and less synchronised approach than in other European markets. While 3G shutdowns have already begun, 2G services are expected to remain available for longer, with timelines varying by operator.

What’s Changing

3G Network Shutdown (In Progress)

  • Vodafone Spain
    • 3G network shutdown completed in 2024
  • Other operators (Orange Spain / MasOrange, Telefónica, Yoigo)
    • 3G networks are expected to be phased out over the mid-to-late 2020s
    • Industry indications suggest timelines around 2027, although no fully standardised national schedule has been confirmed

2G Network Outlook (Longer-Term Transition)

  • 2G services are expected to remain available beyond 3G shutdown timelines, particularly to support legacy IoT and M2M deployments
  • Industry planning indicates potential 2G retirement toward the end of the decade (around 2030)
  • However, no firm nationwide switch-off dates have been publicly confirmed, and timelines may vary by operator

Industry Context

Spain differs from markets such as the UK and France:

  • 3G is being prioritised for earlier shutdown
  • 2G is being retained longer to support existing IoT deployments
  • National timelines are still evolving, with operator-led strategies rather than a single coordinated switch-off date

How This May Affect You

If your devices or solutions rely on 2G or 3G connectivity for data, SMS, or voice, the impact will depend on the network and technology used:

  • 3G-dependent devices may already be affected (e.g. Vodafone Spain) and will face increasing disruption as other operators phase out 3G
  • 2G-dependent devices are not at immediate risk but will require migration in the longer term

This may impact:

  • IoT or M2M devices designed for 3G connectivity
  • Dual-mode devices relying on 3G as primary connectivity
  • Voice applications without VoLTE support
  • Deployments relying on 3G-to-2G fallback

Recommended Actions

To maintain service continuity, Wireless Logic recommends the following steps:

  1. Audit your estate
Identify which devices and SIMs still rely on 2G or 3G connectivity.

  2. Plan your migration
Transition to 4G, 5G, or LPWAN-compatible devices and modules. Ensure new hardware supports VoLTE for voice.

  3. Phase upgrades early
Schedule migrations well before sunset dates to avoid a large-scale, high-cost replacement under time pressure.

  4. Review network coverage
Confirm your target networks and technologies offer adequate coverage across your deployments.

Technologies such as LTE Cat-1 BISLTE-M, and NB-IoT provide future-proof, energy-efficient connectivity options for IoT deployments.
