Monitoring mobile data transmission (ping reboot) in your cellular router

What it is about

Modems only verify a mobile connection has been established without confirming that data can be actually transmitted. Instances such as maintenance or temporary disruptions may prevent data transfer despite a functional mobile connection. In such scenarios, it becomes necessary to disconnect and reconnect the mobile connection, often requiring a reboot of the cellular router.

Especially in remote locations where consistent local access is not feasible, setting up an automated Ping-Reboot monitoring is crucial. With this, the router sends ping requests to a ping server at regular intervals. In the event that no response is received within a specified time frame, the router classifies this as a disruption and proceeds to initiate a reboot automatically. This guarantees continuous monitoring of data transmission and ensures that the router is automatically restarted upon detecting a fault in data transmission.

Suitable Ping Servers

The cellular router needs to be configured with a ping server that is accessible through the router's SIM card. A commonly used server, such as 8.8.8.8, can be utilised for such pinging purposes.

Below are some suitable mdex ping servers, specifically to use with Wireless Logic & mdex SIM cards or mdex IP services:

public-ping.mdex.de
(or 185.39.176.22):

Public ping server, recommended for all SIM cards with internet access. This ping server is suitable for Wireless Logic SIM cards manged by SIMPro!

ping.mdex.de
(or 46.16.216.16):

Internal mdex ping server, only reachable from the mdex network when using an mdex SIM card with fixed.IP+ or public.IP. This ping server is not suitable for Wireless Logic SIM cards managed by SIMPro!

172.21.0.1:

Internal mdex ping server, only reachable from the mdex network when using an mdex OpenVPN service fixed.IP+ or mdex public.IP. This ping server is not suitable for Wireless Logic manged by SIMPro or mdex SIM cards managed by mCOP!

Enabling mobile data transmission check (ping reboot) in the router

Follow these instructions to setup and enable mobile data transmission monitoring with a Teltonika cellular router or Advantech cellular router:

Teltonika cellular router

This guide is based on firmware version R_00.07.06 and may vary with other firmware versions.

  1. Login to the cellular router
  2. In the menu navigate to System > Maintenance > Auto Reboot, click on the Edit button next to Ping/Wget Reboot
  3. Set the following configurations:
    • Enable: Activate (on)
    • Interval count: Number of failed attempts before triggering the reboot (recommended: 3)
    • Host to ping: Enter the ping server (see list of suitable ping servers above)
  4. Apply the changes by clicking on Save & Apply.
  5. The mobile data transmission monitoring is now enabled.

More information for Ping-Reboot settings can be found on the Teltonika Homepage, for example RUT241: Ping/Wget Reboot.

Advantech cellular router

To enable "Check Connection" in an Advantech cellular router, follow these steps:

  1. Login to the cellular router.
  2. In the menu navigate to Configuration > Mobile WAN and enter the following settings:
    • Check Connection:
      • enabled: With this option, ping requests are sent based on the router's routing table.
      • enabled + bind: This option ensures the ping always goes through the mobile WAN network interface (SIM card).
    • Ping IP Address: Enter the ping server (see list of suitable ping servers above)
    • Ping Interval: Ping requests are sent at this interval in seconds (recommended: 300).
    • Ping Timeout: The router waits for a response within this time frame in seconds (recommended: 10).
  3. Save the settings by clicking on Apply.
  4. Mobile data transmission monitoring is now enabled.
